Cannot change screen resolution

Asked by KeithAu

When I boot into the installation of Ubuntu 8.10 the screen resolution is set at 640 x 480 and there are no options to change this in the installation interface. I cannot change the area where I live or change any of the default installation options as a result. If I escape from the installation the Ubuntu desktop is still there, when I try to change the resolution from there I cannot get to the options to change anything as the buttons are at the bottom of the screen and I cannot drag the window up far enough to get to the buttons to make the change. If I maximise the window and click anywhere on it, it jumps to display the bottom buttons, but when i click on a button it jumps back to the top of the window, and then I cannot close the window because if i click on the X in the top right or right click on the top bar it jumps back to the bottom.

How do I change the resolution?????? I had this problem with 8.04 and now with 8.10, surely this problem should have been fixed!!

If you have trouble reaching the proper buttons with low screen resolutions, try using ALT+left-click to drag the window to a new position.

If you are still having problems, you should make sure that you have the properly display drivers enable for your graphics card.

Hope this helps

Thank you the ALT+left-click works well, but i noticed that I have to choose a weird resolution of something like 864 x 638 (an option offered in the menu) in order for it to display properly. 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 didn't display properly. As for drivers i am not sure where to obtain them from I have a Sapphire Radeon 9200SE Atlantis Graphics card, which windows already has a driver for and the disk I got with it, doesn't work in Ubuntu.

This has for the most part solved my problem of being able to reset the resolution to a usable setting, but not the entire problem. But Thank-you again for you assistance.
