To install application you use either the Install/Remove program in the Applications menu (it has only a few selected apps) or the Synaptic package manger (all packages) in the System/Administration menu.

Usually installed applications are added to the menu somewhere (but some are not). If you have problems starting or using a specific application please ask for help on that specific program as there are just to many of them to explain them all.

I'm really just looking for a GUI of sorts to help explain terms and processes in relation to windows. I've been linux for 4 days now but love it!!! Windows is terrible. I understand some of the basic features and the terminal is cool, just looking for someone to explain it too me a little.

I had it plugged in and it wasn't recognizing it but I unplugged it for a while and it works fine. Can I reformat, then partition this and use it as RAM?

Reformat... yes you can.

I suggest you to use gparted to do it...
