libapache2-mod-php4 in Feisty

Asked by kimu

Why libapache2-mod-php4 is not present in Feistys' repositories?
Actually, is present, but not installable cause there isn't a downloadable package.
Web developer need it.

Thanks for your question.

THis package ist not part of feisty anymore. See http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=libapache2-mod-php4&searchon=names&subword=1&version=edgy&release=all

php version 4 is not part of feisty anymore.

I hope this helps

This is not true, cause all the packages related to php4 are part of feisty repositories, downloadable and installable. Just libapache2-mod-php4 is missing and as it is the integration with apache is obviously very importatnt for web developers.
In my opinion, there isn't a valid reason to don't include this package as the rest of php4 is available.

Frankly, I agree with you that it might be too early to drop php4 support especially for a server, and maybe a lot of community support for bringing it back might help. However, if you look it this:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=php&searchon=names&subword=1&version=all&release=all&page=1&number=all

you can see that bascially all php4 packages have been discontinued after edgy.

I hope this helps

There shouldn't be any php4 packages left in feisty. All php4 related packages were removed. Php applications which depended on php4 were changed to depend on php5.

If there is still a package depending on php4 than that's a bug and should be reported if not already happened.

For those of us with hosting companies who still use PHP4, we need these packages integrated to be able to work on our projects. Many hosting companies are not setting up with PHP5 and will wait until PHP6 before upgrading.

In case anyone else was thinking about trying, I have attempted to install these edgy packages:

php4-common_4.4.2-1.1_i386.deb
http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/web/php4-common

libapache2-mod-php4_4.4.2-1.1_i386.deb
http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/web/libapache2-mod-php4

The latter failed as it now seems to clash with apache2.2. In addition, as phpmysql now depends on PHP5, so it is uninstalled when php4 is installed. I am happy to put that on manually, though.

Could we please use this thread to garner some support for keeping PHP4 in universe.

Many thanks,
J.

Of course it is worth pointing out that Edgy is a) still supported b) still available and c) has php4.

If you depend on something in Edgy for your productive activty then why not continue to use that version rather than upgrade to a version of Ubuntu that won't work?

Just a question.

Alan,

it is entirely my fault for installing Feisty without fully understanding the implications, but there are a host of improvements to Feisty which I would like to enjoy on my production box. That, and the fact that I'd rather not reinstall the old OS now!

So, in an effort to have my cake and eat it, I have written an article on how to get PHP4 working as a cgi using FastCGI, and without messing around with the PHP5 install too much. If this is of interest to anyone, I would appreciate comments on it, especially from people who've tried it and can see if there are any errors or serious ommissions. http://jdv.hopto.org/index.php?/archives/84-Ubuntu-Feisty-with-Apache-2.2,-PHP4-with-FastCGI-and-MySQL-support.html

Many thanks.
J.
