Asked by unclesam

Two days ago I upgrade my kernel from 2.6.24-21 to 2.6.24-22 through ubuntu upgrade manager. after I restart the computer, sound card(VIA 8233) and web cam(logitech usb) no longer working. I have to choose the old 2.6.24-21 to run when My computer boot to have the sound card and web cam working properly.

Unplug your webcam and plug it back in - then either restart X (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) or reboot.

Check that your Via 8233 is identified (System, Preferences, Sound) under Device and that your tests work. Also on the next tab (Sounds) ensure that "Play System Sounds" is ticked.

One more thing: Right click on the loudspeaker icon on the top panel and then click on "Open Volume Control". Under the "Switches" tab, ensure that there is no tick next to "Analog/Digital Output Jack".

Hi, I tried unplug webcam and then put it back and then reboot. no luck.
I tried , it shows that I don't have a sound card connected.
It won't open colume control at all because there isn't a sound card found. the loudspeaker icon has a red cross .

OK, computer was my major in university. I can do everything you ask my to do to have it work.

If I use the kernel 2.6.24-21 to boot ubuntu, everything is fine. this is what I can see: the webcam will blink 3 times during the ubuntu booting time (the orange bar is moving) , then the GDM loaded with my speaker has the music(like drum sound, typical for ubuntu). at this point I know that the sound card and webcam are load into system without a problem and I can just login and do what ever I want.

on the contrary, If I use kernel 2.6.24-22 to boot ubuntu, there are no blinks from my webcam and there is no drum sound come out from the speaker when GDM loaded, and I knew that the card and webcam are not loaded and that will be the case.

Something wrong when I kernel loading . I also tried to follow the ubuntu english forum about general sound problem , I will upload what I get in 2.6.24-21 and 2.6.24-22 to you guys to compare.

stay tuned.

When I refer to "Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide" in ubuntu forum : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449, after I tried : aplay -l,

in kernel 2.6.24-21, it shows:
**** PLAYBACK硬件设备列表 ****
卡 0: V8233Pre [VIA 8233-Pre], 设备 0: VIA 8233-Pre [VIA 8233-Pre]
  子设备: 3/4
  子设备:#0: subdevice #0
  子设备:#1: subdevice #1
  子设备:#2: subdevice #2
  子设备:#3: subdevice #3
卡 0: V8233Pre [VIA 8233-Pre], 设备 1: VIA 8233-Pre [VIA 8233-Pre]
  子设备: 1/1
  子设备:#0: subdevice #0
forget about chinese words , I think you know that it lists it detect via8233 sound card.

in kernel 2.6.24-22 , it shows:
aplay: device_list:205: no soundcard found... in chinese.

that is showed the kernel didn't load or find the sound card.

I didn't dig into how to fix the webcam at all. I think if sound card get fixed, webcam will back too.

thanks for look into this for me.

it actually display "aplay: device_list:215: 找不到声卡…" in 2.6.24-22 which means "no sound card found"

The reason I suggested the procedure about the webcam was that I experienced exactly the same thing. Unplugging and reinserting fixed it for me (also on Ubuntu 8.04.1). I use a separate sound card and did not have the sound problem. Sorry to learn that it did not work for you.

You might have to use the older kernel until a kernel update is posted. Other users also are experiencing the same problems.

Can you help with this problem?
