Graphic appearance on screen

Asked by dlkeins

I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my notebook with ATI Mobility Radeon 9600. The screen resolution and frequency have been properly detected, I can see everything, colours are nice.

However, the appearance is not as nice as I am used from Windows XP. Somehow horizontal and vertical lines seems to be not equally wide, characters are readable but do not look really clear, pictures, for example when browsing with Firefox, look "pixeled". It is a bit difficult to explain.

Is this a generic problem with LINUX/Ubuntu which I have to accept, or could this be improved ?
Should be not worse than Microsoft .... ;-)
