sometimes ubuntu freezes after login

Asked by Ilka Jahn

Hello together.

I've got ubuntu version 8.04 and my graphic card is Intel GMA X3100.

Sometimes, about every 15th time that i boot my computer, i only can type in my password an my username and after this there is the ubuntu sound. Then the screen freezes and is black.

I've already tried some things that are suggested in this forum:
I've reconfigured the X-Server. That didn't help.
CTRL+ALT+BKSPACE to restart graphics layer or CTRL+ALT+"+" (or CTRL+ALT+"-" respectively) to change video frequency doesn't help either.
I also can't get into the recovery mode: CTRL+ALT+F2 doesn't help.

It might help solving the problem to know that:
My main-screen develops differently every time I start the computer. Sometimes, there are the task-lists at first, sometimes, they appear after my background-picture. One time, I had a mouse, but nothing else but a black screen...

You'll find enclosed the last bit of the system-protocol of a failed booting.

Why does the freezing happen only sometimes and what can I do to avoid it?

I hope that you can help me.

Thanks

That sounds like a bug in the graphics driver (Xorg). See <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting> for some hints about reporting such a bug. Reporting bugs helps to make Ubuntu better. :-)

It may help to open /etc/X11/xorg.conf as root in you favorite editor, search for something like

 Section "Device"
     Identifier "Configured Video Device"
 EndSection

and add a line
       Option "DRI" "off"
after the 'Identifier' line so that the whole thing looks like

 Section "Device"
     Identifier "Configured Video Device"
     Option "DRI" "off"
 EndSection

Unfortunately this will decrease graphics performance.

It's a good idea to make a copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that if the change doesn't help you can easily restore it.

Hello Florian!

Thank you very much for your help.
Unfortunately, I don't really know if it worked, because I also did an update to ubuntu 8.10. After this further problems appeared: my sound was spinning around, and what was much worse: my network-manager always tried to connect my computer to itself... ;)
After this, I was fed up and I therefore installed version 8.10. Now everything works fine (I hope so).

Best regards
