You can get Xubuntu from their webpage.
http://www.xubuntu.org/get

I recommend downloading the Live Desktop CD. You can start your computer with the CD rom in the drive and choose "Try Xubuntu without making changes to your System". This will give you the opportunity to try Xubuntu and see if it works with all your hardware components. Once you are satisfied you can install by clicking on the Install icon on the desktop.

I was afraid to do that with my hard drive showing full. I probably have 3mg at the most. Would that still work with the trying Xubuntu?

I'm sorry to bother you again. I did go to the site and looks easy enough to download but I'm confused on which to download. The Intel x86 desktop cd or 64-bit PC (amd64) desktop, see according to my spcs in #52705 and please help me on this. I'm not to computer savie on this stuff. I'm also going to download the ISO Recorder, I think that will help to make a good copy and how to make my computer boot from the cd. Thank again many times for your help.

I would recommend downloading the LTS version 8.04.1 x86 desktop version.

Since space seems like an issue on your current hard drive, I would try to free up as much space as possible. Please backup any important data on your machine. Run CCleaner - this should free up a lot of space. Then you should be able to download xubuntu.

Check the md5sum of your download iso
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

And compare with
ea2e852642ed5dcc722d67e181eb5c89 *xubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

To burn you ISO this guide is helpful
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

If you have problems booting the CD rom, you may have to add some F6 boot options/parameters
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootParameters

If you run into any problems, please aks for help

Good Luck

Ok I downloaded the Infra Recorder and the MD5 Sums, but for the life of me can't figure where the download is for LTS vversion 8.04.1 x86 desktop version, they either say x64 or x i386. Is it one of these two? Can you give me the link? Thank you

I'm so sorry to keep bugging you but I don't care if I wipe the hard drive clean of the winxp. I already deleted everything I can including the Virus program , games and after running ccleaner deleated that. So now I have 146 mg of space on the hard drive and total physical meory is showing 256 and available Virtual is showing 123.81. Will I be able to boot from those links or the 8.04 x86 desktop version?

The important thing is that you download and burn the Xubuntu ISO. If you are able to do that then you will be all set. Give that a try. If you are unable to create your ISO, then maybe I can give step by step instructions on how to free up more space.

Let me know, if you are unable to do this...

Yes I followed instructions and used your first mirror and checked it on MD5SUM and downloaded the Infrarecorder and everything was fine. I put the cd in the computer and rebooted and everything went fine until I got to who are you! and it hung there, could not go foward so I went back and the guided partitioning is showing 100%. I'll see if it hangs again was hoping to wipe out xp while doing this. Is that happening. Ok it's going forward now since I went back and starting to intall....wish me luck! After it installs can I go in there somehow and delete Windows or will it be gone?

If you have properly burned the CD and are able to load the Live Desktop, you are very close...

If it properly installs with you selecting Guide Partition: Entire Disk. You will not have to delete Windows. It will be entirely gone and all the space on your hard drive will be available for Xubuntu.

Good Luck...And please do not hesitate in asking for help if you have problems

You are so nice! Everything so far is real good so far I'm at 52%! I think that's pretty fast for an old compaq. I did do the guided partition, I only had 2 choices either that or manual I believe. I chose the 1st so hopefully window will be gone. I will keep this open until it installs and I reboot and let you know. Thanks a bunch for your help!
