ubuntu does not connect to internet when wireless router inserted

Asked by JAMES

I have a standard desktop computer with dual boot windows xp/ubuntu.
With an adsl1 modem only the internet/mail under both windows and ubuntu worked well.
Now that I have inserted a wireless router between the modem and computer the system still works ok with windows.
However under ubuntu neither firefox nor thunderbird can connect - I get message connect find address.
I tried changing address from modem's 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1 within ubuntu which is address for router but it still will not connect to internet.
Some time ago I asked this question but it was not resolved as I had to be away for some time.
In addition the wireless router has no problem connecting by wireless to a windows only laptop.

Please refer to my question 51199 which contains a listing.
Since the internet does not now work with ubuntu to access this sort of data I have to remove the wireless router to copy these files. That is unless it is possible to access them from within windows....I would not know how to do that.
Will next refer to any response in approx 12hrs time.

Although I have accessed command route it shows ip address as 192.168.1.0.
Even though I altered it to 192.168.1.1 to try and return it to original it stays as above and will not connect to internet at all now even with wireless router removed,
So how can I force it to accept either 192.168.1.1 for direct via modem or 192.168.2.1 to access through the wireless router?
Even windows does not give this much trouble and that is saying something!
