After upgrade to 8.10, resolution stuck at 800 x 600

Asked by Catin Dehat

Under version 8.04, my screen resolution was 1280 x 1024 but could not get any animations. found Envy and it found what must've been another driver which, even though refresh rate was limited to 50 or 51 Hz (my monitor preferred 60 Hz), gave me the 2nd choice of animation and 1280 x 1024. Updating from Hardy to Intrepid disabled Envy; my resolution is stuck at 800 x 600; Sysinfo's NVIDIA

the rest of the story: ...NVIDIA Graphic Card Information cannaot determine amount of video RAM or GPU frequency and, clicking NVIDIA Display Settings brings up an error message saying: "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."

Trying to follow instructions, I find that 'nvidia-xconfig' does not exist. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

One odd NEW event: Google Earth now, even though the display is in low resolution, displays the full earth, complete with continents. Previously, all I got was a round white circle with stars inside and outside the circle.
