That question cannot be answered objectively. Some people find X easier to use than Y, and a lot of people are very passionate about their preferred linux idstribution. However, Ubuntu is generally known as a linux distribution that is very easy to use, and its primary target is home use. In my opinion it is very well-suited for new users.

As far as I'm aware, Ubuntu is the only linux distribution which ships free CDs directly to your home. The newest version of Ubuntu is version 8.10. However, I would advise you to try out Ubuntu 8.04 first, for several reasons, among them that you already have a CD for Ubuntu 8.04, that 8.04 is a so-called LTS release (LTS = Long Term Support) and that new releases generally tend to be a little unstable, i.e. there are usually some bugs in a new release, and it can take some weeks to fix them. Ubuntu 8.10 is quite new and still has some issues (my personal opinion, others might disagree). Ubuntu 8.04 was released half a year ago and is very stable. There are no obvious differences or new killer features in 8.10, and as a new user you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

Well, there's www.opensuse.org, home of the openSUSE distribution. Then there's www.fedoraproject.org, home of Fedora Linux. And www.mandriva.com is the home of mandriva linux. There are hundreds of distributions available, but these are generally the most well-known and the best for new users.
