Ubuntu crashed on upgrading to 7

Asked by harshad

Hi All,

I have been using Ubuntu 6 for a couple of months. (relatively new to Linux)
Today I tried to upgrade from 6 to 7 using update manager.

I followed all the instructions, I took almost as hour and then it went for a restart.
During the upgrade it asked me to disable all the third party softwares.
After the restart the initial Ubuntu screen appears and after that nothing happens.

I have a 60 gb hard disk.
20 gb windows partition (ntfs)
15 gb common partition (fat32)
rest is Linux partition.

I am still able to boot using windows
Let me know if I missed something.

thanks,
Harshad

Can you tell me exactly what version of Ubuntu is this. Is it Ubuntu 6.06 or Ubuntu 6.10. Because there is no upgrade path to 7.04 if you are using 6.06 (you will have to go to 6.10 first).

After the computer does its self tests when you switch on, you should get a prompt and a short count down. Press ESC to get to the grub menu. Press E on the first line, to edit it, then on the next screen press down one and press E again to edit the kernel line. At the end of the line is probably "splash quiet". remove those, press enter, then press B to boot.

This will provide more diagnostic messages as the system boots. Note any errors you see at the bottom when it hangs and report them to us here.

Instead of upgrade, I did a fresh installation and it worked well for me with no error.
The new desktop features are really gr8.. and I am enjoying it.

However, sometimes Ubuntu simply freezes, with no error message.
Keyboard does not respond, I can move the mouse around, but cannot click or select.
It simply freezes.. hard boot is the only solution. It again comes up fine with no error message.

Is it related to my graphic card (I am using Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop - ATI Graphics Card), I have enabled desktop effects and even installed Beryl.
Any place where I can check the logs to know the problem.

thanks,
Harshad
