Ubuntu won't install or run on Dell Dimension 2600

Asked by Ben Clemons

I bought the Desktop edition of Ubuntu (Hardy Heron, I think) to install on a Dell Dimension 2600 that had been wiped clean. It booted up fine, but when I selected "Install Ubuntu" the background screen with the bird would appear and eventually a window that said "Install" in the header would appear, but the window would never fill in. It would never get past this point. When I tried to run from the CD, a blank tan screen would appear and eventually an error message would appear in a white box in the upper left hand corner of the screen that said something about the GNOME daemon, and that the problem was due to no reply, timing out, or a blocked bus. It wouldn't progress any further than that. I also tried a CD that I had burned, it got further on the installation than the bought CD. It would get to the point of partitioning the drive, then ask for a user name and password, but I couldn't enter them into the blank. I could move the cursor over the blank, but when I clicked the mouse, it would not let me enter them. Any Ideas?

Could I ask how much RAM is installed in the computer? You must have more than 256MB to install/run from the "Desktop" CD. If you have less than that, I would suggest downloading the "Alternate CD" and installing from that. Also, if you have a small amount of RAM you might want to consider Xubuntu as it uses XFCE for the Desktop Environment and will be a little more "lightweight" than the GNOME version of Ubuntu (bear in mind you'll still need the alt. cd even for Xubuntu).

Can you help with this problem?
