installation of wireless card thwarted
My D-Link Air Plus Xtreme G (DWL-G650, H/W v. B5) functioned well for years on my computer running Win XP. The Windows OS was corrupted and I loaded Ubuntu. This did not accept my G650 installation disk. Is there a way to load the data needed to run my notebook adapter? The computer is an older A31 IBM ThinkPad.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.
thanks, hgl

From my reading your card should work out of the box... with no need for an install disk for the drivers.

Try running the following command at the command prompt and post the results here:
iwconfig

1) where do I type in the iwconfig command (sorry I am a computer novice).
2) the installation disc has an autorun set of files, which obuntu does not seem to engage.
3) If I browse the CD file and go to either the setup.exe. or the autorun exe, I get an error message that notes that an error has occurred while loading the archive.
If you cana answer #1 for me, i may be able to get to the solution...

According to the chart:
DWL-G650 H/W Ver.:B5 F/W Ver.: 2.54 PCMCIA

Supports network install?
Supported in installed system?
Works "out of the box"

See above ?
? Yes Yes Yes Automatically 2007
I would have thought that my card should install itself, as per the chart. However I do not know what "Feisty" means. If this is crucial, please advise.

According to this chart, the card should self install. However I do not know what "Feisty" means. If this is of note, please advise.

Yeah... I think it should install automatically as well... the 'iwconfig' command would verify that...
From the Applications menu select 'Accessories' and then 'Terminal'
In the terminal window type:
iwconfig
You can then cut and paste the results in to a post here.
The Windows CD you have is not valid for Linux unless you are using a wrapper which I do not think you need to do.

That indicates that you have a wireless card... ath0... but it has not associated.
When you look at your top panel... there should be a network manager icon... if you click on that you should get an option to connect to a wireless network...

I rebooted and found a network icon next to a speaker icon in the top panel. It did show my network and it appears that I have a successful connect. Thank you for your help and patience.
