Suggestion for changing windows partitions

Asked by passionguy

I have installed gutsy keeping the windows partition undisturbed allocating 9.5gb as ext3 & 0.5gb as swap on 40gb IDE. I have one ntfs & two fat32 for the remaining space. I like 2 change this partitions 2 be used by linux in its own format. I belive this will be gud 4 Ubuntu. I need a brief explanation on how to do this....

I have seen the below directories on mount point & also on installation(but specified optional). Whats the size that would be ideal for this directories??
/boot
/home
/tmp
/user
/var
/srv
/opt
/local

Thanks 4 ur friendly support.....

im a bit confused! u have 2 fat32 partitions and u want to convert them to ext3 to use with ubuntu right?

so do u want them for data or do u want them as "directories" for some of the directories u are listing here?

if u just want them for data then u should mount them under /media (it could be done else where but it is usually done here)

if u want to partition the fat32 partitions so that u can create enough partitions so u can have each dir u are listing here on a seperate partition, i think this is not necessary.. if u have a / partition and a /home partition plus swap, it is enough for a typical installation.

in any case it is hard to estimate the ideal size of this directories and it depends on ur needs (if u dont know the size then u probably dont need the directories ;) )
for /boot i would say 100mb should be enough
the size on /home depends on what u are planing to store there
size of /usr and /opt depends on how many programs u are going to install and where (/usr maybe 2-3gigs personaly i dont use /opt , it is for 3rd party software)
/var maybe 1-2gigs depending on ur needs
/tmp maybe 1gig this again depends on ur needs

personaly i use 6gigs for / and 12gigs for /home

hope this helps a bit..

If you tell Ubuntu to use entire disk Ubuntu it will create a ext3 partition + a swap partition on your hard disk.
Everything on your 40 gb hard-disk will be erased...

Hope this helps
