Ubuntu Sarge repository at ftp.debian.org doesn't exist anymore

Asked by KushalSharma

I have Ubuntu 8.04 installed on my notebook. Since some time ago, whenever I run an update, I get an error message saying Failed to fetch http://ftp.debian.org/dists/sarge/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found. The system is able to fetch files from all the other sources. I checked the directories at ftp.debian.org/dists, and found no directory named sarge over there.

Has there been any change that I'm not aware of or is it that this line "http://ftp.debian.org/dists/sarge... should not be present in my sources.list file?

Thanks in advance for all the help

Kushal

Hi,

That repository in your sources.list is actually for Debian Sarge (it isn't an Ubuntu repository at all). The Sarge release of Debian is now unsupported, which is why you can't download packages from it, so you should remove it from your sources.list.

That being said, you shouldn't really be downloading packages from that repository anyway, as the packages were compiled for Sarge and might not be binary compatible with libraries on your Ubuntu install.
