ubuntu feisty upgrade failure

Asked by Dave_0987

I am trying to upgrade from ubuntu edgy to feisty. It stops soon into the process and gives the error:

Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty-security/main/binary-i386/Packages.bz2 Sub-process bzip2 returned an error code (2)
Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty-security/main/binary-i386/Packages.bz2 Sub-process bzip2 returned an error code (2)

What does this mean and how can I fix it?

Thanks

Dave

Hi, make sure you have updated your edgy first before upgrading and which method of upgrade you are using?

Hi.

Thanks for your help

Edgy is updated as far as I can tell. When I click check in update manager it gives an error saying that it can't find the repository:

http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/edgy/Release.gpg: Could not connect to gb.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (194.169.254.10), connection timed out

I am upgrading by clicking the upgrade button in the update manager.

Would I be able to get around all this by upgrading using the alt cd rather than over the internet?

Thanks again

Alex

It's busy. Try again tomorrow once the mad scram to upgrade calms down.

In my case it is saying that there is an error during update. A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.
Failed to lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock

What does it mean?

I went back to checking if the edgy was updated after all and the following messages appeared. Is it because many people are still downloading Feisty?

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

My original problem turned out to be that the system was busy. I tried again the next day and it worked fine. Try it again later.

In my case the system is still busy! Maybe can one redirect the update manager to update itself with another site or mirror site? In my case although it has found many of the unfound files, now since these last four days it has been searching unsuccessfully for the same missing two files:

http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/dists/edgy-plf/non-free/binary-i386/Packages.gz: 504 Gateway Timeout

I was frustrated expecting the upgrade to happen all by itself. I just downloaded the new ubuntu. I burned it on a cd and then in the computer........now it's working perfectly.

I finally managed to upgrade from edgy to feisty and all is well except that the upgrade will not recognize my ext hard drive whereas edgy did. Does anybody know how I can configure feisty to recognize it.
