I'm not sure:

Alternate --> Version dedicated to special and particular installations as an example it arranges preinstalled OEM, modernizations and installations via net, installations for computer with risked hardware

Desktop --> is the evolution of the previous ones release, than but stavolta it introduces a graphical installation completely (thanks to the installer Expressed) that it is possible to make to leave after that the Live version is under way contained effectively in the cd/dvd.

I don't see the dvd iso in the ftp. Probably it will make after.

Hi, one would normally use the alternate CDs to do upgrades (from the alternate CD) from one Ubuntu release to the next as opposed to doing it online via the Internet. Desktop CDs are the ones you'd use for your regular PC/laptop as opposed to the Server CDs where you use them, well, for servers. ;-)

CD/DVD images are out for all releases including the recently released Feisty. Look in "http://releases.ubuntu.com/feisty/" and check the bottom page for the list of images for CDs. Not all servers carry the DVD images because of the load they'll impose so if you're interested in DVDs you would have use bittorrent.

I hope this answers your questions.

P.S. Giving back to the community can be done in many ways. Answering forums questions, handing out CDs, or just promoting Ubuntu by word of mouth is enough. :-)
