Some problems with ubuntu 7.04

Asked by Massimo Forti

I update my personal PC (hp pavillion dv1000) from ubuntu 6.10 to 7.04. After this update I have found some problems with the new packages.

1) The Network-Mamager tool broken in start up. I have reinstalled it using Synaptic and after this problem stop.

2) I used Ubuntu 6.10 to connect me in ldap server of my company. The modules pam were shape to make this, here the configuration:

etc/pam.d/common-account
account sufficient pam_unix.so
account required pam_ldap.so

/etc/pam.d/common-auth
auth sufficient pam_unix.so nullok_secure
auth requisite pam_ldap.so use_first_pass
auth optional pam_smbpass.so migrate

/etc/pam.d/common-password
password sufficient pam_unix.so nullok obscure min=4 max=8 md5
password requisite pam_ldap.so
password optional pam_smbpass.so nullok try_first_pass use_authtok

/etc/pam.d/common-session
session required pam_env.so readenv=1
session required pam_unix.so
session optional pam_ldap.so
session required pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/ umask=077
session optional pam_foreground.so

This configuratin has allowed me to connect my pc with ubuntu 6.10 to the ldap server exceeding the problem that dbus has when the modules are modified (this is a link of the problem: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=539919 ), but in ubuntu 7.04 this configuration don't work, in fact now I'm no be able to use pmount in gnome. I have had to use the installation configuration.

3) The avahi-daemon fail in the boot oh my pc. I recive this error:

Timeout reached while wating for return value
Could not receive return value from daemon process.
                                                                         [fail]

Now i'm not be able to find my hosts service.

Thanks for you aid.

Nothing can help me ???
After one day of I use Ubuntu 7.04 I'm not much appy. I still have a avahi-daemon problem (in ubuntu 6.10 all ok, fortunately I don't update my server and other clients).
Another problem is the sys log file, in ubuntu 6.10 the files did not exeed th 1mb, now in my ubuntu 7.04 installed in my hp pavillion the files have a bigest dimension (over 4mb in only 4 hours).
Can I downgrade the version to 6.10, or I must reinstall all ???

slackwarelife have some patience, you only posted your message 4 hours ago to a support system run by volunteers in their spare time.

Am I right in saying we can ignore points 1 and 2 in your first message given you say you have resolved them?

If the log files are growing this indicates there may be useful information being written to them. Is it worth having a look and seeing what error messages there might be?

1) netwok manager was my error probably. This machines is my and I use it to work, to study and to play game. Probably when I made the configuration to be able to connect my notebook in wi-fi of my enterprise, of my university and in my home, I done some mistakes. I delete all configuration and I reinstalled all. Now it works

2) The pam modules are very hard to configure. I'm note sure to do all correctly, but in ubuntu 6.10 the rules over write work correctly (I don't have problem with dbus daemon, using the file over write the users are able to use usb device without modify the /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf and natwork-manager.conf)
In my hp I didn't change these files after update, but I was not able to use the usb device or cdrom (did't auto mount it). Now I change this file with the start Ubuntu file and I can use the usb device.

3) The avahi-daemon don't work. When I start the PC the boot process stops when it calls avahi-daemon script and gives this error:
Timeout reached while wating for return value
Could not receive return value from daemon process.
                                                                         [fail]
I try to restart it in a shell, but I recive the same error.

Thanks for your help and sorry because I have not had patience, but I felt myself excluded :(

Thanks very much

If you are using network manager then as I understand it you should comment out all lines there except the two for the "lo" device.

I do the change, but the lines in syslog file continue to be many.
The avahi-daemon brocken on the boot, but now when i restart it on shell it works.
What I don't understand it is because in ubuntu 6.10 I had not any probles whit this config file. I used thie interfaces file with the Network-Manager on 6.10.
How I resolve the avahi problem on the start up and how can reduce the log level.

Thanks very much

What network cards do you have, the following command will tell us about them:-

sudo lshw -C net

All the messages you pasted from your log relate to wpa_supplicant. I wonder if this could be a wpa_supplicant issue?

I have done the test with the ubuntu 7.04 live cd and I see this:

1) the interfaces file is this (I use the network manager in 7.04 live cd) :

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp

auto eth2
iface eth2 inet dhcp

auto ath0
iface ath0 inet dhcp

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp

It is different from mine, but it has not the # before the line, but in live cd there is not the Avahi-daemon problem

2) The syslog file have the same line of mine, after only 1 hour of job the file is larger than 1mb

3) With new Ubuntu I wait more than 90'' in order to use the desktop, before with 6.10 the start up was 35''/40''. One problem is avahi-daemon that broken, but I must wait very also for having the login mask and after I must still wait in order to enter on my desktop (all this process ask me over 90'').
I don't know what I do :(

Thanks.

What you want to say with: "All the messages you pasted from your log relate to wpa_supplicant". I must open a bug report in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wpasupplicant/+bugs and insert wpa_supplicant line present in my log file.

Thanks.

You have bug 107630 open now, I would upload your log file to that bug and continue the discussion over there rather than have a bug and a support ticket both running.
