Keyboard freezes on logging on to XP

Asked by PeterC

I have just installed Ubuntu 8.04 (on a separate drive) on my computer (XP Pro Windows OS) as dual-boot system. My keyboard (Microsoft - Natural Keyboard Pro) works OK when logged in to Ubuntu 8.04 but when I try to log-on to Windows XP OS (after selecting this option from the Grub screen) Windows loads up OK to the log-on screen but I am unable to enter my username as the the keyboard is frozen at this point and therefore unable to log-on. The keyboard is operational at boot-up up to Grub screen as I can select the operating system or edit the commands before booting.

I have tried the following;
a) Connect different keyboard
b) Added 'acpi=off' to Grub.
c) Changed the keyboard type in Ubuntu
d) Various BIOS options
all with the same result i.e. keyboard locks on Windows XP log-on screen.

Your suggestions to remedy this would be appreciated !

First off, this is a Windows issue....

First suggestion, try a few generic keyboard to get Windows logged in. Windows won't install drivers until after you've logged in. Try as PS/2 keyboard if possible. Once you've logged in plug in the new keyboard and let it install the drivers. Should work ok from there.

Thanks for your suggestion, I have finally been able to log in to Windows and restore it.
