'Create launcher' crashing in desktop

Asked by Arindam

I recently upgraded my laptop from dapper to hardy 8.04 xubuntu through CD that downloaded from internet. After one week or so, I tried to create a launcher from "Desktop -> Right Click -> Create Launcher" but it crashes when I about to type anything in the first text box of create launcher window i.e. "Name". Its just exiting. I don't know what's happening. But strangely if I type anything in other text boxes like "Comment" or "Command" its remains there, but crashing when I type any single letter in "Name" textbox. It was working previously. Why this weird behavior suddenly?

This looks like a bug. There are several bugs that may looks like yours, for instance bug #256041 . Does the bug happens only when you create your launcher on the "second screen"? (I don't know what the bug reporter means by "second screen", perhaps it is a physical second screen, or the second desktop).

It started happening after the upgrade. I don't know what that bug reporter meant by "second screen" as you mentioned. In my case, its happening while I tried to type anything in the 'Name' text box of the Create Launcher window. It crashing (just disappear with no message or nothing except that /var/log/message entry) in the first letter I typed.

Other Infos:
> I have only one workspace.
> If I am trying to edit anything in existing shortcuts from RightClick --> Edit Launcher, the window crashing. In this case its even crashing if I press tab or any key or even drag the window by mouse or touchpad !! Also note, if I am creating new launcher from 'Desktop -> Right Click -> Create Launcher' and then press tab or drag the window - its NOT crashing!! Weird!

What if you make it crash, and go to the directory /var/crash . Do you have any file there? By double-clicking on it, you will send an automatic bug report --probably more useful for the developers to identify the problem.

Otherwise we can turn this question into a bug report.

Nop. No file in /var/crash after I made it crash.

Hi Arindam,
Apport has to be activated in Hardy, then a crash file will be generated in /var/crash and processed to the bug section on launchpad with double click.

See section: Enable Apport
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

Thanks Sam. Actually apport wasn't running. I made changes /etc/default/apport but I needed to reboot.
