Very slow Bootup

Hi

Here is my dmesg text to help you out..
Ubuntu 8.10 takes forever waiting for file system when booting. I have to hold the enter key down to complete the boot process. Can anyone help me??

This looks to be a bug ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/190414 ).

The workaround - seems to work for most of the posters on the bug - is adding clocksource=hpet as an addition option on your grub boot entry. To do this, restart your system and then when you see the grub boot menu, select your normal kernel, but press e to edit the entry rather than enter. Scroll to the end of the line and add clocksource=hpet. Press enter then b to boot. If this works for you you can make the amendment permanent by editing /boot/grub/menu.lst and add the additional option to the end of your preferred kernel.

I added that clocksource=hpet at the end of the line that also had VGA=791. Hope that's the right place to put it...

When it gets to Waiting for root file system-It halts until I press the enter key to advance the orange bar on the screen. Then when it gets to running /scripts/init-bottom, the same thing happens..........After that it went real fast into Gnome.

Also...the Check of Drives in the boot process is slow to respond to the escape key(takes 15 seconds before it skips it)

Can I reinstall the kernel...........If so.. what codes in the terminal would I use to do this?

Reinstalling the kernel may not work out that well because if it is something wrong with the particular kernel you are using then the problem will most likely stay even after a reinstall.

However, you can try and compile a new kernel of your own by following these instructions which may fix your problem(if it is a problem with the particular kernel series, then you will need to build a different kernel version than the one specified):-

By the way, since you are using an Nvidia card, you will need to install the Nvidia driver by yourself since the Nvidia driver only works with the particular kernel it was compiled for, so it may not work with your compiled one.
