The only software I am aware of is Cheese - that is in the repositories - give it a try and see if you like it.

Cheese is nice and simple. There are more webcam apps available, but I haven't used anything other than cheese. Here is a list I obtained by typing "apt-cache search webcam" in a terminal (I removed a few that weren't relevant). You can install any of these apps in Synaptic Package Manager. I'd suggest trying out any that sound interesting.

luvcview - USB Video Class grabber
lynkeos.app - Tool to process planetary astronomical images for GNUstep
motion - V4L capture program supporting motion detection
peercast-geekast - GNOME interface to peercast - peercast-servent data files
pymissile - Control Marks and Spencer USB Missile Launcher
