My mistake! Misprint in the title. 8.10, actually.

When you type "asoundconf list" (without quotes) into a terminal (Applications, Accessories, Terminal), you should only see one sound device and that is your SB Live.

If there is also an entry for your motherboard soundchip then you need to go into the BIOS to disable onboard sound.

On the Ubuntu desktop, under System, Preferences, Sound, open the Sound tab and ensure that "Play system sounds" is ticked. Under the "Devices" tab, the "Device for Default Mixer Tracks" should read "Soundblaster Live!"

Right click on the loudspeaker icon on your top panel and check that it is not muted. A left click on the same icon will tell you what your sound level is.

Thank you very much. The problem was actually located in the sound preference -- you were right and I had no idea. I just changed it to pass through the on-board audio and everything turned itself on. Thanks again, man. : D
