WEP Key Will Not Work Ubuntu 8.04

Asked by DizzyPenguin11

I'm quite new to the wonderful world that is Linux.
I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 on an emachines PC.
I replaced XP with the installation. Everything went smoothly and is running fine.

However, when I enter my WEP key nothing happens.

I am using a Netopia Wireless Adapter that came with my linksys router.
The computer recognizes the signal with the correct SSID no problem. But when I enter my WEP key it acts like it's going to connect but it doesn't.

The icon in the top right of the screen does it's little animation, one dot turns green, then the prompt to enter the wep key reappears.

I've researched many different things and even tried reinstalling the OS.

Please Help??

Windows will try both combinations of keys automatically... You likely need to select the right options when you put your key in... there are several kids and strengths of WEP.

I have tried every option given to me.
It is a hex key.
But I have tried it on every other type as well.

You should have a length option as well... 64bits or 128bits have you tried those?
Have you tried turning WEP off to ensure you can connect w/o WEP -- if you can't then there is another issue other than the WEP. If you can then we know we are working on a WEP issue.

Yes I have tried the multiple length options.

I'm unable to turn off the WEP.

I did wire the connection through my laptop and it was able to connect. Not a great connection, but a connevtion nonetheless.
I know that this probably has nothing to do with it but just throwing it out there.

can you open a terminal and past the results of the following commands:

lspci

iwconfig

thanks... I am starting to think you have a possible driver conflict.

I can't post everything that it said, I'm not typing it all

It did recognize the commands though.

You can type the commands as follows:

lspci > lspci.txt

and

lwconfig > lwconfig.txt

That will create two txt files in your home folder that you can attach or you can open them and just copy and paste the results here.

Dizzy:

Do you have an ethernet cable or a usb flash drive. I just do not want to give you advice for the wrong wireless card and make your situation worse.

Can you help with this problem?
