How to install development release of Ubuntu 9.04 jaunty jackalope from Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by guivho

Hi,

I would like to build the latest development release.

The help page at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/UsingDevelopmentReleases says:
'sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list; sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'.

That doesn't help really.

It does not mention what has to be added to /etc/apt/source.list

It does not give any idea about what has to be 'apt-gotten' to have a complete local source tree.

I suppose that - once I got this this source tree - it would then contain readme files that explain the actual build process.

Please advise where I can get enough info to get me going.

TIA, guivho.

I suppose so. I would build the latest development release so that I can study parts of it, and - just maybe - become involved in the development.

That is he first option at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/UsingDevelopmentReleases as far as I understand it.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean

Then...

Using System → Administration → Software sources [Ubuntu software tab] please select
Download from: Main server

Then...

Then please be ready to download and to install every day a lot of packages... and sometimes to get issue due development stage...

BTW i usually use development releases, i usually install it (NOT on all my pc) a week after the stable release was out.
Is not suggested on production pc, i do this mainly to test and to send bug reports...

Hope this helps

Wow, do you know these steps by heart, or is this formally documented somewhere?

I finished the 'sudo aptitude dist-upgrade' but got a warning along the way that I had to run liloconfig, and then /sbin/lilo

However, when running liloconfig, it complained about /etc/fstab containing UUIDs iso /dev/sdcn stuff. I switched back to the /dev/sdcn notation.

But right now, I'm using grub which is setup for a multiboot environment. If I really have to, I would consider forgetting about the multiboot capability, but I'd rather not.

I suppose that I can stick to my current grub setup (after updating /boot/grub/menu.lst

Please advise (and thnx for your help so far)

This is what i usually do to upgrade a release when there are not still alpha... released...

If you wait for the first alpha release i think you are able to update your Ubuntu 8.10 by simply typing from terminal:

sudo update-manager -d

Hope this helps

The "man" command will be your friend (and it is also mine friend)... to understand what we are doing...

Here the command we have used...

man sudo
man dpkg
man apt-get
man sed
man aptitude
man lsb_release

and some deb packages and Ubuntu logic...

Thank you

Hi,

Well I finished the last 2 steps and 'lsb_release -a' reports Jaunty. So far, so good.

But should I not find a vmlinuz somewhere on my drive with today's date?

Right now, my /boot/grub/menu.lst points to my old Intrepid vmlinuz kernel.

At least, I think so: it is dated nov 3, which is about the time I installed Intrepid.

Please advise,

Guivho.

Marcobra,

I am very pleased to confirm that I have successfully booted in my fresh Jaunty system :)

Thank you so much for your help!

(My vmlinuz didn't change but the initrd.img was a fresh one)

Anyway, once again, thanks a lot!

Subject: Jaunty Alpha 1 released

"On a western hillside, a pack of hungry coyotes flushed their prey
from a thicket of scrub mesquite. With gleeful yips, they began
pursuing what first appeared to be a large jack rabbit. But what was
this thing? In between its long ears, the animal was sporting a set of
small antlers similar to those of an antelope. Darting first to the
left, and then to the right, it reached the bottom of the hill where
it put on a burst of speed and quickly outran the trailing coyotes.
Once at a safe distance, the creature stopped, turned around and
emitted several coyote-like yips in a rude mockery of its hapless
pursuers. The sounds seemed to linger tauntingly upon the air as the
discouraged pack abandoned the chase. From this small episode, the
artful and elusive jackalope emerged from the shadows of an Old West
  legend."

Welcome to Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 1, which will in time become Ubuntu
9.04.

Pre-releases of Jaunty are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable
system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even
frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers
and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 1 is the first in a series of milestone CD images that will be
released throughout the Jaunty development cycle. The Alpha images are
known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs,
while representing a very recent snapshot of Jaunty. You can download it
here:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/jaunty/alpha-1/
    (Ubuntu Studio)

See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mirrors for a list of mirrors.

The primary changes from Intrepid have been the re-merging of changes
from Debian. We've also been spending some time getting the new ARM port
up and running (http://www.ubuntu.com/news/arm-linux), although its
build daemons are still catching up so installable images will have to
wait for a future Alpha release.

This is the very first roughly working set of images off the production
line, and they haven't all been tested, so you should expect some bugs.
Prominent among these are that some of the images are oversized and can
only be tested using a DVD or a virtual machine, and that the desktop CD
isn't ready yet! This release consists only of the alternate and server
CDs; the desktop CD will follow in the next Alpha release.

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop
Jaunty, have a look at the jaunty-changes mailing list:

  http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/jaunty-changes

We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce list if
you're interested in following Ubuntu development. This is a low-traffic
list (a few posts a week) carrying announcements of approved
specifications, policy changes, alpha releases, and other interesting
events.

Bug reports should go to the Ubuntu bug tracker:

Enjoy,
