Why it is needed to have the recovery mode in startup?

Asked by Arindam

Why there is a recovery mode option available while staring laptop. I know by editing menu.lst I can remove this option from being displayed while booting. But I want to know

- Why this option is provided in the startup?
- Is there any issue if I remove this from start up?
- If I need to start by laptop in recovery mode can I use my ubuntu CD to do so?

I am using Ubuntu 8.4 in my laptop.

Thanks in Advance!!

It boots Ubuntu into a "single user mode". Allowing for console based maintenance. For rescuing failing disks, recovering a forgotten root password etc.

Removing the line wouldn't cause harm to your installation but I would strongly recommend leaving it as is.

Sure. You can boot into a regular Ubuntu graphical environment and perform tasks from there but it requires a little more work. Mounting disk partitions manually etc. Its good fun and worth playing with just to get a feel for what you do in a situation where you needed to recover an installation.

That goes for the regular recovery mode also.
