No sound on thinkpad

Asked by katherine

My IBM Thinkpad R40e has no sound. I don't have much experience with Ubuntu, so I have no idea how to fix this. (I already checked to make sure nothing was muted lol.) Thanks

Please post the output of:

lspci

You run this in a terminal session (Applications | Accessories | Terminal)

This will tell us what type of sound card you have.

I have setup a few thinkpads with ubuntu and have never had an issue with the sound not working.

Use the volume keys on the thinkpad to ensure that the audio is not muted or set all the way down. Also open your volume control by right-clicking the volume icon in the system tray and select Open Volume Control. Again, check to make sure that the levels are not muted or set all the way down.

Hope this helps

I am not aware of your card having issues, nor have I found any specific posts about it.

Here is a general guide you can take a look at:

Same problem on a Thinkpad T43p with a 00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03).

No problems with sound until latest 2.26.7-9-generic kernel update. After that I have no sound.

Upgrading the thinkpad T43p to kernel 2.26.27-11 does not solve the problem.

I upgraded today a Dell computer which was playing sound. After the restart the sound was gone. I had to turn the sound OFF en up again. The music started to play again. So I went to my Thinkpad, disabled the sound and turned the volume up again. The music played and played again.

It seems that on this machines I had to disable the sound and to enable again to get the music playing.
