Acer webcam
Acer Aspire 3680. I've installed ubuntu after having too many problems with windows vista. After I installed ubuntu I can't use my built in webcam. I've tried downloading the drivers from Acer site and anywhere I could get more info. Downloads go well, but I can't run them on ubuntu? Please help as I've got friends & family in South Africa and I'm in New Zealand - I need my webcam. :-(

You must have been downloading the webcam drivers for Windows, Ubuntu cannot use those drivers, however there is a possibility that your webcam is supported with Linux Drivers. To check if it is compatible, you can use a useful program called EasyCam. Here are some instructions to download and use easycam:
1) Add the EasyCam Repository to download Easycam from
In the terminal (Accessories > Terminal), run the command:
sudo su
(enter your password when asked). Then:
echo deb http://
And Then
echo deb-src http://
2) Installing EasyCam
First reload the package list by running the command (in the same terminal):
apt-get update
Then install EasyCam by running:
apt-get install easycam2-gtk
(Answer yes if it gives you any questions)
3) Running Easycam
When the installation has finished, close that Terminal window, and go to Accessories > EasyCam
Done! Click 'Next' in EasyCam and you are good to go

Okay, I've got the packages installed and I can find easycam in Applications - Accessories. The webcam light is on to indicate it works. I've tried to open it with Cheese, Skype and Ekiga, but I don't have image. Help, again?

can you open terminal post the output of doing
lspci > lspci.txt
You can then open the text document created and paste the test or just attach the document.

Please go to Applications | Accessories | Terminal - that will launch a terminal application.
In that window you can type:
lspci > lspci.txt
That will create a text file placed in your home folder. The home folder can be accessed by going to Places | Home Folder
You can then open that file and paste the content in a post here, or simply attach the file.
From that I will be able to tell what model your web camera is and hopefully be able to get some information on it for you. It may also tell us that your camera is not being detected.
Thanks for being so patient as we work through this with you.

tevier to get your webcam info, the right command to type is "lsusb" so:
Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
lsusb
lsusb is the lower of LSUSB
copy and paste result here....
Then you must also dress the /etc/apt/
head -n 10 /etc/apt/
( i'm interested of the first 10 rows of the file and the command will grab only the first 10 rows of /etc/apt/
Thank you

Yes, please do a lsusb as lspci did not show the camera... I was not sure where the built-in camera was going to show.
same steps as for lspci to get that text.
Thanks for the assistance marcobra.

tevivier:
We are always happy to help, that is the great thing about the Ubuntu community. I am glad I got your files recovered, but this issue may be a bit tougher.
Because you are new to Linux I want to explain what the issue is... there is no built-in driver for you particular brand of web camera. This particular model has been an issue for quite some time based on the links I am finding.
Here are some more links that may help:
-------------------
The Source Forge Drive Development Page
http://
-------
This is a mailing list (of people using or developing the driver for you camera) and you should be able to look at old communications as well as as questions.
https:/
-------
An Ubuntu Bug Report
https:/
-------
I have to say at this time the driver is still in development from what I have read... and may or may not make it in to the next version of Ubuntu. You may want to get a sep. USB web camera if you need one badly or...
You may want to install Windows and then install Ubuntu so you can dual boot while you wait for certain hardware to be supported.
I am sorry that you have run in to some hardware that, from what I can tell, is not supported yet.

The built in webcam only works in aMSN application, but nothing else. The USB cam works with cheese and Egika but not skype. I have incoming sound with aMSN, but nothing with skype, cheese and egika. I don't have any outgoing sound at all. When I test call with skype, i get a message of problem with play back. What could that be? But I don't mind the webcam, as long as it works with one of the applications, I can live with it until there' a driver.

The outgoing sound could be that you have the microphone muted.
Right click on your the speaker icon in your upper panel (assuming you are using Gnome) and select 'Open Volume Control'
On the 'Switched' tab make sure that the Microphone Capture is checked, If there is a 'Mic Boost' option check that too.
Then on the 'Options' tab
Select 'Mic1' and try recording...

Yes, please open a new question tevivier (I thought you had marked this one as solved -- though it really wasn't 'fixed'). We try to keep questions to one problem each so others coming in can look at them for reference. If you feel this is solved (though the solution was that there was not a driver presently) you can mark this solved as well.
