Can visit Google websites only.

Asked by IshtiaqRouf

I just installed WUBI. My internet works fine, but I can visit Google pages only (google.com, gmail.com, etc). I can't visit any other website. Can anyone please help me with the issue? Thanks.

Hi,

This is really strange indeed. What happens if you open a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and try to ping another server? For instance

ping www.ubuntu.com

I pinged www.yahoo.com, it worked. I tried Tracerout, but it failed. I'll ping ubuntu.com shortly.

I pinged Ubuntu.com from the terminal. There was no packet lost.

RTT min/avg/max/mdev = 106.367/112.325/135.058/6.876 ms

It still opens Google pages only. Even Ubuntu's page doesn't open.

What if you type the IP address instead of the URL in your web browser? For instance, 91.189.94.156 should open the main page of Ubuntu web site.

If you get something, then the problem comes from the configuration of the DNS server of your internet provider...

(Sorry, the previous answer was stupid, if the dns is not configured properly, you could not ping www.ubuntu.com). Can you reproduce this behavior with another web browser ? (try to install dillo for instance, it is very small).

How do I install Dillo? Is it included in the installation? Or do I need to download (using my windows machine) and install it?

Mmh, since you said your Internet connection was OK, I was expecting that you could install softwares directly from Ubuntu... Maybe it's worth to give a try. In the terminal, type

sudo apt-get install dillo

and confirm by typing your password. Then just type :

dillo

to run it, and just try to visit any (simple) web site.

I am still puzzled with your problem... Why only Google sites? I guess you can access whatever you want from Windows? What is your Internet provider (is it from a public access point? Perhaps they have a strange firewall or something like that)?

Otherwise, I have read a couple of people saying not too nice things about Wubi. Perhaps you may want to uninstall Wubi and to install Ubuntu on a different partition?

I tried installing software from Ubuntu, but it didn't work. It can't access the repository. My internet is working fine in windows. I just use a Linksys router with Comcast's high speed internet. No fancy firewalls (unless one comes with Ubuntu by default).

I'm equally puzzled by the situation. I have a wireless card installed with this machine (desktop) too. It just doesn't get anything beyond the Google websites!!

Maybe your network-card isn't configured correctly. When connecting to some routers, I get wrong settings for the MTU (Maximum Transfer Unit) on my network cards. In the terminal type
ifconfig
to get a listing of your network devices. If you use ethernet for connecting to the router, look out for the section that says "eth0" in the beginning, if using wi-fi, then check the eth1 section (I assume you are using ethernet). Within the eth0-section you should have something like "MTU:1500" or "MTU:1492". If the number following MTU is something very different, try the following commands:
sudo ifconfig eth0 1500

if that doens't work, try
sudo ifconfig eth0 1492

Hope this helps in any way.

I re-installed WUBI, but the problem still persists. I can visit Google pages only. The MTU is set to 1500. The DNS resolution seems to work fine, but the browser is now showing "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."

ifconfig shows "33 errors" in RX. Also shows Interrupt 19.

do /var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog, or /var/log/dmesg show you anything relevant about the erroneous packages? (you should probably try accessing a page and then check near the end of those files so you don't have to go through all of them)

I just installed Ubuntu last night, and i am having the exact same problem. I can ping any website with no loss, but i am unable to visit any website other than Google. I am dual booting Windows xp and i can visit any website just fine. I am also using a Linksys router and Comcast. I have had Ubuntu, Fedora, and Etch installed in the past and never had this problem.

has anyone figured this out?

I also am experiencing this problem. More detail: I have two linux routers neither of which work correctly with Ubuntu wired or wireless. I can browse google.com and a few other web sites but I can't browse many other sites (yahoo.com, etc) which I can successfully ping from my router. When I run windows and connect to these same routers either wireless or wired I can browse fine. I have an old Belkin router that I can connect to the Internet and browse via both Ubuntu and Windows - however, it locks up after about 15 minutes. My Linksys routers worked successfully until about a month ago.

I have also loaded Tomato and DD-WRT on one of my Linksys routers and that didn't help. I don't believe the router is the problem. It is either a change at my ISP or a change in Ubuntu, or a new setting required or a combination of the above.

This question states it has been "solved". I don't see a posted solution, if there is one, please send it to me.

I got no solution. I thought it was my pc only, and uninstalled wubi. Lately, there seems to be many more facing the same problem.

I figured out the problem for my system. My ISP has had performance degradation so I figured the problem was related to TCP or MTU. After playing with all the suggested variants of TCP in sysctl.conf and none of it working, I started using the command 'ping -s 1464 -c1 yahoo.com' to determine the correct mtu size for the degraded system. I kept lowering 1464 to lower and lower numbers until the response was correct. For me the correct number was 1456. That number plus 28 is what I entered into my router and that fixed it.

See http://swik.net/Ubuntu/Only+Ubuntu/How+to+Optimize+your+Internet+Connection+using+MTU+and+RWIN/cbnda for guidance on setting your mtu size.

Good Luck,

I had the same problem with my Ubuntu 9.04.

I just solved changing the MTU to 1400.

Can you help with this problem?
