Printing with Ununtu 8.10

Asked by Julian

I've just decided to move from Windows to Xubuntu 8.10 as my laptop is a little old and Windows keeps crashing so I thought I'd go for Xubuntu as most of the work is internet with some wp and spreadsheet. I downloaded the ISO and installed and then updated to get the latest fixes etc. Managed to get Flash going also, however cant print. System finds network printer (Attached to XP system) and will send print Job. Printer rattles a couple of times and tried to print but then doesnt print. Gets stuck in the print queue and only way to remove it from the XP system is to stop and restart Print spooler services. I've heard of CUPS but cant find it anywhere to configure. I'm a complete newbie and am surprised I've actually got this far...wireless lan picked up straight away etc...Anyone know the fix to totally convert me to my new op system???

Many thanks to anyone who has the knowledge to offer assiatance..
Julian

Have you tried System->Administration->Printing->New ?
if not, try that after having connected and powered on the printer

Thanks for your help. When I installed the printer I did run through the new printer option and it went through ok...however as I say, the printer rattles a few times and tries to print but fails. The job then gets stuck in the print queue in the XP system that has then printer attached. Other systems I have can print but they are not windows based not Xubutnu based....

Thanks Anyway...

Hi Koen

I have an HP PSC 1410. I did select the correct HP model when doing the install (From the drop down list provided) and the install went through fine. I'm thinking it may be a problem at The XP system end. Maybe I have to configure XP to accept print jobs from Unix Clients...I have started the Unix printing option I think but it doesnt seem to make any difference....looks like a tough one to crack! Appreciate your help,

All the best

Julian

I am having a problem with my hp7960 photosmart printer but in trying to resolved it i found a site where they have the latest drivers for Hps. You may want to surf up the site and find the latest and greatest for your printer.
http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-PSC_1410
is the site for your printer.

http://openprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=hpijs&fromprinter=HP-PSC_1410_All-in-One
On this site you can generate a ppd file which you can import into your printer and see if it works. My issues is not resolved i hope you have better luck.

Can you help with this problem?
