I have downloaded Google Earth. I am a novice. How do I install?

Asked by Frank

The Google site for Google Earth indicates that to install downloaded Google Earth it is necessary to go to "terminal" and to navigate to a directory and enter ">...." I have tried to find a way to "get there" with no success, and the terminal help section of Ubuntu is not clear enough to my novice ability to enable me to know what to do.

1) Google Earth is available from the Medibuntu repository. You can add this repository. Read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu . The package can then be installed by connecting to the internet, opening a terminal and using: sudo apt-get install googleearth

2) Being able to navigate using the terminal is fairly basic stuff. When I open a terminal I am in my "home" and I can show the contents by using: ls (this stands for list). I have a directory, which I created called Downloads and I can change to it by using: cd Downloads (cd for change directory)(Remember it is case sensitive!) I can look at the contents of that by using ls again. Then I can move back down with cd .. (that's cd (space) two dots)

Howto install Skype and googleearth

Please simply add the medibuntu https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu repository to install Skype and/or GoogleEarth.

-- Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type or copy and paste:

If you are using Ubuntu 8.10 intrepid
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/intrepid.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

If you are using Ubuntu 8.04 hardy
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

-- give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter

Then type or copy and paste:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update

You may be asked to accept this package even though it cannot be authenticated. This is normal; typing "Yes" means you trust Medibuntu.

Then type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install skype googleearth

To install Skype on a Ubuntu 64bit please take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/skype_amd64

Or better try this: http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-ubuntu-amd64

If this solves you problem, please mark as Solved. If not, please clarify your question.

Hope this helps
