windows can't access intrepid partition

Asked by t_robert

i used to be able to access files on my ubuntu (hardy) partition from windows through explore2fs. after upgrading to intrepid, explore2fs can not read the linux partition anymore. i tried another tool, ext2ifs, but it didn't work either. is there a way i could regain access from windows to ubuntu?

I have the same problem. The solution for me was to make a shared fat partition.
Or what you can do (I haven't tried this ) is to make a fat partition and mount it on /home so your home directory is located on a fat partition... Not so nice solution i think, but I'ts one..

Please tell can't you open ntfs or fat32 partitions from Ubuntu...?

Why you don't store your Ubuntu data files on NTFS or FAT32 partition...

I think is the best way to share same data with Windows.

Thank you

thanks, marcobra!

it's an ntfs partition. i do save save my files onto the ntfs partition every now and then, but sometimes i forget and it's a bit a hassle logging out and back into xp. it's not quite a big deal though. i seldom log into xp anyway - mostly just to play games. i just think it would be really cool if i could access my ubuntu partition whenever i want to.

I got same problem after upgrading my Ubuntu to Intrepid Ibex (8.10). I cannot access my linux partition from Windows using Ext2IFS (which worked seamlessly before upgrading). But today (2008-11-25) I update the Ubuntu and Ext2IFS is working. It detects my linux partition and I can access it just like before the upgrade.

hi, r88ney! i tried re-installing r88ney. went through the process, but in the end it gave me the same result: trying to open my linux partition, i get the message that the drive wasnt't formatted along with the question whether i wanted to format it. i might be doing something wrong. could you walk me through the options? i usually take the defaults; are there options you think i should change my reply to?

hi t_robert, sorry for late reply

Here is the chronology:
1. I upgraded (not clean install) my Ubuntu from Hardy Heron to Intrepid Ibex
2. I installed Ext2IFS v.1.11 in my windows xp
3. I tried to access ubuntu partition from windows xp but end up with problem I mentioned above, so i remove (uninstall) Ext2IFS v.11
4. I log into ubuntu intrepid and update my ubuntu (normal update)
5. I log back into windows xp, download Ext2IFS v.1.11a, and install it.
6. Ta da.... It works.

When upgrade and update Ubuntu I take default option. When install Ext2IFS v.1.11a, I take default option.
Hope it helps.
