Install Ubuntu 8.10 on USB Disk

Asked by fbe

I have got an expa 250GB USB Drive with 2 Partitions one of them ist empty. I wish to install ubuntu 8.10 on the empty Partition in that manner that I don't have a Bootmanager on my Windows XP Installation. My Thinkpad allowed to boot from USB Drive.
Is that possible?
I am not experienced with Linux. If I have a linux Installation I can improve my knowledge.

Just try it, it will be improve your knowledge too ^-^ ...

I think it will be no matter while Windows XP Installation is in another drive ..
But maybe if you want to use ubuntu, you must set boot from usb drive at first, and if you want to use windows, you must change boot priority again ....

Good Luck, don't scare to try ^-^

Thanks for your answer!

I know this, but I do'nt wish to have a Bootmanager in my Windows system. My Windows system should be untached, no problem with a Bootmanager on my USB Drive.

..My Windows system should be untouched, no problem with a Bootmanager on my USB Drive...
here is my boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

I don't wish any changes on my Windows System. I hope it is although possible to boot from my USB Drive.

Yup, you can try installing ubuntu, if your windows system is in another drive from ubuntu(not just another partition), the conclusion is if ubuntu and windows in the same drive, then it will be GRUB (boot manager) to choose boot to where, else it will be nothing to your Windows system, and you can boot to Windows normally without GRUB ....

But if you still scare, you can remove your windows drive first, and using only your usb drive, and then install ubuntu....

Just Try it

I'm so sorry, now it's your bios problem, i suggest you create your question again with the problem that you have now, but can you start your windows normally? how did you do to remove your windows drive?

I have corrected my Bios Problem by setting to default.
...how did you do to remove your windows drive?...
I have got a Thinkpad, on this Laptop it is easy to remove the drive..

After correcting the Bios Problem:
If I boot from USB the ubuntu Logo appears on screen, but after a few seconds appears the following error message.

device descriptor read/64 error -110
device descriptor read/8 error -110... and

target file sys dont have /sbin/init...and...

Try passing init=bootarg

if I type init=bootarg appears initramfs.
And now I don't know what to do. I am not experienced with Linux.
