Playback of audio and video

Asked by VinayB

Here in India, we like to use the Ubuntu very much...
But, due to the lack of sufficient basic plugins such as the ability to play mp3 or any video file, even though it has a player, we dont use the software and turn to windows instead....
the videos can only be played if we have an internet connection and after downloading files from the internet...
But what if we dont have internet connected to our homes???
even installation packages are not available for download.....

it has to be connected to the internet and has to download the packages by itself... which is not a feature which we desire where internet connectivity is not available.....

what i would say is that, instead of including more than two players in the iso file, that can be replaced by a single player that plays all the common formats if disk space becomes an issue....
or else, upgrade the installation cd to an installation dvd where more space can be found and more applications and support for different formats can be included....

You could use a distro like Linux Mint. It is based on Ubuntu and it comes pre-installed with all the necessary codecs and even Java. It fits on to a single CD. It is 100% compatible with Ubuntu repositories and all the bug fixes, forum suggestions etc. for Ubuntu are applicable to it. Here's the link:

Ubuntu does not come preinstalled with all video codecs not because of space issues by rather legal issues.

Most of the packages you are interested in can be found in

ubuntu-restricted-extras
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=ubuntu-restricted-extras&searchon=names&suite=all&section=all

You can download this package and then install on a PC that does not have any internet connection.

Additional multimedia packages can be found in the Medibuntu repository.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Medibuntu packages can be found here
http://packages.medibuntu.org/

I would recommend downloading

libdvdcss2
w32codecs

Hope this helps
