System freezes

Asked by mneagul

My Toshiba Tecra A8 laptop freezes periodically. This problem started 1 week ago.
After the hang the laptop isn't accessible anymore.
I don't think that it is a hardware problem because windows works normally.

How can i debug the problem?

Thank you

Thanks for your question.

Does it freeze after a long time running, or do you switch your laptop off periodically?

You could look with the 'top' command what the system usage is, and if you have any percentage on 'wa' which means that there is some kind of blocking for multiple processes trying access hardware resources.

I hope this helps.

The system freezes randomly, the only program (except init ;) that was running each time the system crashed was X & Co.
Could this problem be caused by X?

I want to mention that after the crash the laptop no longer responds to ICMP and is not responding to sysrq.

Thank you for your answer!

Have you run memtest?

What application is freezing specifically?

Carles Oriol:

I have run memtest and there are no problems.

tenthconcept:

The entire system hangs, not a specific application. As I said in a previous message the system no longer responds for network requests (ICMP, HTTP) neither for sysrq commands.

Hello I've got similar problem. After upgrading to Ubuntu 7.04 STABLE VERSION (!) my MAXDATA ECO 4000 IW freezes randomly, so that nothing is responding then. I don't think it is connected with some specific application.

Please help because it is impossible to work on my computer.

Here is my uname -a, lspci and dmesg autput.

We have a similar problem with our two Toshiba Tecra A8s but we are running Windows XP, so it is not an OS problem, must be hardware. Trouble is there is no pattern, no warning and no error messages. Where to start?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask mneagul for more information if necessary.
