Upgrading to 8.10

First, I'm a newbie. I am a Windows person trying to get on board with Linux. I have an IBM T23. I am currently using 8.04 and am trying to upgrade to 8.10. The cd is recognized, but doesn't show anything about an upgrade. I tried Alt+F2 - gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade/", the password box came up, but didn't do anything after that. I tried double clicking the exe file (like Windows), but that didn't go anywhere. I tried booting the laptop with the CD and got the "install" screen, but nothing about an upgrade. Am I doing something wrong, or is it this doofy laptop?

the live cd is for new installs of ubuntu and trying out new versions of ubuntu, to upgrade you want to use the upgrade manager which will fetch the packages it needs from the internet. this is because the live cd only contains the 'default' packages and thus any other packages you may have installed must be upgraded via the internet.

Thanks, that worked. Would have been much simpler and shorter if the CD worked as advertised. But, everything's ojk now.
