Notebook battery drains after shutdown

Asked by Colt725

I have an HP DV6910us notebook. Dual boot vista and Hardy. How can I shutdown Hardy without loosing battery power?
When I shut down from Hardy for several days my notebook battery is completely drained. When I shutdown from Vista for several days my notebook battery has about the same amount of power as it did when I shut it down.

It sounds like Hardy is just going in to Hibernation or Sleep mode and not really shutting down. After shutting down in Hardy does the computer turn back on if you hit your space bar? Is the power indicator flashing?

I will try hitting the space bar the next time I shutdown on Hardy. I have shutdown on Hibernation and I get a flashing light. Because of my schedule and being a Linux newbie, I use the notebook to learn Linux on my days off. Which means for about 4 days the notebook is powered down. I have Suse installed and that is what I shutdown on last night. It will be interesting to see what kind of battery life I have on my next powerup.
I'll keep you posted.

Dang!! My notebook battery had no juice today. The only thing I can think of is that the Linux kernel has a bug...LOL I am lost and I really don't want to install Vista just to allow my battery to keep the stored energy when I shut down the notebook.

If the power light is flashing on your laptop after power down it hasn't powered down. It has gone into you've gone into ACPI S3 mode (sometimes called sleep mode) when in this state the RAM on your laptop is still drawing power to keep it's state.

Colt:

If your power light is flashing you are not shutdown.

When you go to:

System | Shutdown

you should get a dialog box with the following options:

Shutdown
Restart
Suspend
Hibernate

You want to select Shutdown

You also want to wait to close your laptop lid until the computer is shutdown and there is no power light nor a flashing power light (the charge light is ok if it is plugged in, but not the power light)

If you do not get those options let us know and we can troubleshoot that issue.

When i shutdown i get the menu and select shutdown. I wait for the notebook to complete shutdown, no lights on or flashing and I pressed the space bar ..nothing. That is how I shutdown last night and this evening my battery at startup was down to 75% Guess I will take the battery out on the next shutdown since it will be about 4 or 5 days before I get to use the notebook again.

Well... from a logical standpoint if your laptop is shutdown and your battery is draining then the OS should not make a difference. It is possible you have some sort of short.

Can you help with this problem?
