Hi John

You state that you are upgrading from hardy heron. If you use the downloaded Ibex, it will wipe out your Hardy installion together with your settings & data. To upgrade, use Upgrade Manager (from System - Administration menu). Because Hardy is long term support (LTS) and Ibex is short term support (STS) - see Ubuntu's main page for descriptions of LTS & STS) - upgrading to Ibex is not shown on the Upgrade Manager main window. I'm at work (without Ubuntu), so I can't check out where it is, but you need to set a check box in Upgrade Manager to allow you to upgrade to a STS from a LTS.

Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources. Go to the Updates tab and change the drop down menu at the bottom from Long Term Support Releases Only to Normal Releases. Once this is done go to update manager and there should be an option to upgrade to 8.10.
