You just need to run the dpkg command as root.

sudo dpkg --configure -a

But to completely update your system I would recommend all of these commands

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get autoremove

These commands can be typed or copied into the terminal. You can open a terminal from the menu Applications-> Accessories-> Terminal

You will be asked for you password. When you type it you will not see the cursor move.

I am new to ubuntu.Even after running all those commands the problem persists & dpkg manual correctionrequired is repeated.I shall be glad to know how to get over the problem step by step.
