how to retain /home during clean reinstallation

Asked by Alan

When I installed 8.04 I mounted /home on a separate partition, following advice that doing so would make it easier to reinstall. I'd now like to do a clean install of 8.10. How do I ensure that my existing /home is retained and used and is not overwritten? Do I use the regular liveCD or the alternate?
Thank you.

Alan,

A clean install of 8.10 isn't really necessary. You can upgrade to 8.10 very easily using the internet, or alternate cd.

But if you'd really like a clean install, tou can use the regular live CD. Just make sure you choose the advanced partitioning option in the installer. Set up the partitions by specifying the mount points of each of the partitions. Ensure that you have specified the root partition "/" and the home partition "/home", and any others if you split it up further.

Finally, make sure the format checkbox for you /home partition is *not* selected, where the others are.

Good luck!

Thanks Andrew I'll try this.
I should mention that I did try an upgrade but ran into a problem: somewhere near the end of the process it hung up with a message similar to: 'Idconfig deferred processing now taking place'.
In any case I'm happy to have set up /home separately so that I can (I hope) do a clean install without much difficulty.
Thanks again.
