Download and reading e-Books

Asked by Lesetja

I am using Ubuntu version 6.10 and recently installed Adobe Reader 7.0.9 to be able to open and download e-books. I get the following error: Acrobat Reader could not open ‘ebx.edt’ because it is either not supported file type or because the file has been damaged(for example, it was sent as an email attachement and wasn’t correctly decoded). How do I resolve this?

"If you receive a file EBX.EDT instead of your e-book, this is usually because you have forgotten to install the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader. (Note! This is not the same program as the Adobe Acrobat Reader)."

Does the Linux version of Adobe Reader even support the DRM features in the ebook?

What happens if you try a different file? Is the file actually corrupt?

You shouldn't need to install from the adobe site, acrobat reader is in the Ubuntu multiverse software repository

See these pages for how to install acrobat:-

How do I download the Acrobat eBook Reader and Acrobat reader on my PC. All am reqesting is step by step procedure.

I have gone into the urls that you send but cannot make sense of what I should do.

If you have a moment please help me.

Sure. It's quite a lot to take in for a new user.

1) Enable the multiverse repository: to do this go to System --> administration --> Software sources/preferences (it is named differently in different releases).
2) Install acrobat: to do this go to System --> administration --> synaptic package manager. In the search box look for "acroread". When found, right click it and choose "install", hit apply on the toolbar and it should download and install the reader.

Once installed you should find it on the menu (sorry I dont know where it sits on the menu) under Applications. You can then open it, and use that to open the ebooks you download.

let us know how you get on.

How do I load this?

Is this inside your browser you get that message?

if so, install (using the same method as before - with synaptic) the package "mozilla-acroread".

This should add a plugin to your browser so you can read the ebooks.

Instead of clicking on the link of the eBook, try the right mouse button and then 'Save as', and save the file on your HD. Then open the file from you Adobe Reader. If this works, the mime-type/extension for this format is not associated with the Acrobat eReader and therefore might not start it automatically.

It does not work.
When I right click on the file I don't see the save as option.
The save as option is available when I double click on it and it shows 3 options 1. Open with; 2 save to Disk and 3. Do this automatically for files likes this from now on.

I selected the save to disk option and the file appears on the desktop as ebx.etd.

When I point at the document I see Resource String not found

I think txwikinger was suggesting that when you see the ebook in your web browser, to right click and save as, not after you have already downloaded it.

Ok. I seem a little confused. As Alan pointed out I meant to save the file on your HD and open it from the Acrobat Reader.

Open Acrobat Reader

The use the open file button or menu and open your file.

Is that the point when you get the raw text you described above? Or from which application do you try to open your eBook ?

Perhaps I need to ask the following questions: Is it possible to download and open e-books using Ubuntu version 6.10.?
If it's possible how is it done?
Is there something I am doing wrong?
I am asking these questions because I was first required to load Adobe Reader and then Acrobat e-Book reader and still e books can't open.

As I write this, the file is sitting on my Home folder as a ebx.etd. file.

When I right click and open with Acrobat Reader it says Acrobat Reader could not open ‘ebx.edt’ because it is either not supported file type or because the file has been damaged(for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn’t correctly decoded).

Mind you this is the first question I posted seeking a solution.

We are of course making an assumption that Adobe acrobat (a closed source proprietary product that we have no access to the source code of) can open the file that you have been given.

Does the copyright on that ebook prevent you from redistributing it? i.e. could you make the file available on some free web hosting for us to test in various readers so we can see what the problem is.

The issue for us is twofold, we dont have access to the file you do, and we cant see the code of Acrobat so cant tell what it is doing or even trying to do.

I hope you appreciate that makes it difficult for us to support you.

Can you try installing the acroread-plugins package which is in the "medibuntu" repository. To do this you will need to add the medibuntu repository:-

sudo wget http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/sources.list.d/edgy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

Then update:-

sudo apt-get update

Then install the acrobat plugins:-

sudo apt-get install acroread-plugins

Restart your browser and try again to read the ebooks.

This is my crisis: I have affiliated with Netlibrary to access some
ebooks on their website. Using windows I am able to download these
resources by activating DRM.

Now my question is; can I be download ebooks using 7.04 from Netlibrary?
I couldn't with 6.10 hence I want to find out if the latest version is

D NOT TRY VERSION 8 - IT IS BROKEN

Then use wine to run the acrobat file.

Here is a link to the wine user's guide:

http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/index

Before doing anything you may want to look at chapter 3: Configuring Wine.

After that you should have a look at chapter 4. In particular to install your program you should copy it from your flash drive to your ~/.wine/drive_c directory and use the command (I assume the adobe installer name is foo.exe, change it to the one matching your software):

wine c:\\foo.exe

Thanks for all your tips, all suggesting I read chapter that and chapter
this to resolve my ebook problems. I am now very confused but not lazy
to read the suggested chapters in order to get a solution to download
secured ebooks using Ubuntu. I am confused because I don't know what you
will say next because it looks as if one solution leads to another
question instead of a solution to the problem.

My question was/is: Using ubuntu 7.0 will I be able to download secured
ebooks? The answer was yes on condition I install wine and use wine to
run M/s application.

I have read some bit on installing wine but find difficulties in running
downloaded third party packages.

Is there perhaps some simple linear tips on how to download ebooks using

I can try to help you out with Wine, but on ebooks I wouldn't be able to tell you.
By reading what the others have told you above, I understand that ebooks (at least those you have bought) are using a proprietary format which can only be read by proprietary software.
If this proprietary software is not available on Linux and you cannot install and use it with wine, than I'm afraid you can't read those ebooks on Linux.

Quote from Adobe on the topic of "Linux Reader unable to act upon .etd files":
"In order to open .etd files, you require the eBooks plugin for the Adobe Reader. However this is not shipped with the Adobe Reader for Linux.
You would presently need to use the Windows version of the Reader in order to view the files."

Now a snipped quote from the: US Department of Justice Antitrust Division:
"The Antitrust Division promotes and protects the competitive process ... through the enforcement of the antitrust laws.
The antitrust laws .. prohibit predatory acts designed to achieve or maintain monopoly power."

Personally, I think we really need to start making some loud noises about these issues to stop this discrimination.
According to the US DOJ we have the law on our side.
