Ubuntu 8.10 problems

Asked by preacherles

I just upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10. It wouldn't install and now I cannot boot up. I am not very happy with Ubuntu. I just installed 8.04 on my wife's laptop and runs great. If I cannot get mine to work, then I will never use Ubuntu again. I shouldn't have this problem.

You need to give us some useful information. Launchpad is not the place for a rant. If you screwed up your installation and don't want to give us any information to help you, then either stop using Linux or do a fresh install of 8.10.

MY appologies. First, I am not ranting. I was angry with the fact that the upgrad didn't go properly. I know that part of the problem is with my laptop. But, as for that, I am not going to stop using Linux because an os has screwed up on laptop. Ubuntu has been the best that I have used, and I have bragged about it for two years. I like 8.10, but I am part to blame because I didn't back up my files. I have always upgraded without a problem with Ubuntu, so I was very surprised when it failed. All I can remember is that the message was: it was unable to upgrade and it would not work properly. I can't remember if it was some of the software tools, or what that won't work; but when I restarted, it froze and I could never get it going again. So, I downloaded 8.10, and did a fresh install on in. It works fine, but my graphics card is struggling--but that is my computer problem, not an os issue. My intention was not to bash Ubuntu; but certain releases have been worse than others for me--even on other computers. I hope you understand my situation. The other thing is that it was easier to configure my wifi in 8.04 than in 8.10 as well.

Please answer me this: is it safe to upgrade, or is it better to do a fresh install of each release?

Actually, I don't have any more questions about my laptop. I did a fresh install of 8.10. I am not as happy as I was with 8.04; but it'll do. I do have a question about another in which I tried to run 8.10. Acer Travelmate 2420: 1.5 GHz memory, 256 MB of RAM, and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900. It will not boot live. It stalls in the splash screen. Any suggestions? It currently has Linspire 5.1.427 on it and runs fine; but is out dated. It is my daughter and really love Ubuntu. What can I do?
