Ubunto 8.10 install with 8.04 already there

Asked by Lwilliams

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 from within Windows Vista. All good (except firewire that is). I want to upgrade to 8.10.

What is the correct way to do this and not disturb the dual-boot that I now have? Do I go into vista and uninstall 8.04 and then in 8.10? Can I upgrade from within 8.04?

Not at all new to computers (25 years) ....new to Linux.

Thanks blackwolf13........that may do it ...

marcobra........ what is the difference between the "regular" 8.10 download that fits on a CD and the "DVD" download?

If you've got a good internet connection you can upgrade online

follow these instructions : http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

Hardy does not propose to upgrade to intrepid be default as Hardy is Long Term Support and Intrepid isn't, you can change this default behavior

Thanks, guys. I will give the "within Ubuntu" upgrade a try before using the disk. But I would like to know the difference between the CD and the DVD download. Does anyone here know?

According to http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/whichbuntu the difference is :

What's the difference between the Ubuntu CD and DVD?
The CD usually contains only one version of Ubuntu (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu) and is either the Desktop CD, the Alternate CD, or the Server CD. The DVD contains the entire Main and Restricted repositories, which means it has Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu, allowing you to install any or all four versions without needing an internet connection.

Can you help with this problem?
