Ubuntu still done on CD - no DVD ISO???

Asked by Jammit

I have raised this issue before with the Cannonical company about 9 months ago..., that making CD - ISO files as the ONLY download option, is a really stupid idea, because:

a) CD's as the medium to burn too - are basically obsolete.

b) A spindle of 25, 50 or 100 CD's is more or less the same prices as the same spindle of DVD's.

c) One DVD's holds 6 1/2 times as much data, as a single CD.

d) CD's on a $ for Storage basis don't compete very well with DVD's - hence accelerating them in obselescence.

e) By the time the "junk" shops are selling spindles of DVD's for hardly anything, I think by and large, for all of the above reasons the chances of scoring spindles of CD's ARE now getting really slim.

d) And the Blank CD's are.bordering on almost impossible to get.

So I am thinking that the Cannonical people ONCE and FOR ALL TIME, ought to make all the ISO's into DVD format and make them available and on the front of the download pages; and then relegate the CD ISO's into a secondary web page.

This practice of pushing the outmoded technology first, and not even hosting the already out dated and in the phasing out DVD format, is quite irritating.

I mean Blue Ray is not exactly flooding the market, but..... when those 50G disks are only a few bucks... no one is going to be needing or wanting the CD's and probably not even the DVD's...

Yeah so, THE DVD ISO format ought to be on the download pages right now, if not a couple of years back.

So the failure to provide the DVD ISO's as a download is rather frustrating.

Because here I sit with a spindle of DVD's and no one in town sells any CD's.

All I can say is get over it.
I can buy cd very easily, you can but more on a dvd so what! Ubuntu is only about 700mb any way so the rest is not used and can not be used.

If CD-RW scare you that much you could look into Ubuntu studio which only comes with a DVD iso. Alternatively you could just burn your 700mb Ubuntu iso to your 4.9gb dvd. I think the main reason that Ubuntu dosn't provide a dvd image is that not everyone has a dvd-rw drive (I recently had to purchase one) and not everyone wants to download a massive image. having just a dvd iso exclude a large section of the market that are looking to run ubuntu on machines that are not the latest shiny model. oh and for all that neil wasn't the nicest of people to you, please don't start an argument.
