totem decoder

Asked by gerryk

I did as suggested and enabled universe and multiverse in the software source section. Then I opened the terminal and pasted the commands that were suggested. My problem is what do I do next? I can't find anyplace to save this change. Do I use the enter key? Any help will be appreciated. I'm running 6.10 and have the printer working and the CD writer up as well. Totem plays back sounds but no movies in any format: mpeg, wmv mp3, etc.

To play back dvds you must install the package dvdlibcss2.
To reproduce movies coded in windows formats, you must install the package w32codecs.

You can find both of them in this repository:
deb http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ edgy free non-free

If you followed the instructions provided on the ubuntu website this should be enough.
If it doesn't work, we might find another solution.

Thanks so much for your help and everyone involved in support. I did everything suggested but still no dvd playback.
totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not have the appropriate plugins to handle it. Totem could not play 'dvd:///media/cdrom1'.No URI handler implemented for "dvd". I am satisfied with the performance of the rest of the operating system so I won't worry about the DVD playback now. I did sucessfully download the codecs32 and all of the other reccomended solutions.

Ok, since I don't use Totem at all, I have googled a bit and I found on the Italian Ubuntu website the notice that Totem is still not able to reproduce dvds (instead, it can reproduce all the other file formats if you installed the packages mentioned above).
I don't really know if that is true (although I guess it is), since I have never tried it out. What I can suggest you to do is to install another program to repoduce dvds. The ones I use are gxine and ogle (ogle-gui is the name of the package of the front-end).
If they work, then it's a Totem issue... If they don't work, then we might try another solution :)

Ok, to be more precise, those are the packages you should install:

gxine
libxine-main1
libxine-extracodecs
ogle
ogle-gui

Hope this helps :)

Allessandro, I'll check out the gxine. Thanks for your help. Are you
Italian? I'm living in Houston, Tx. How long have you been working with the
Linux or Unix for that matter. I'm a little over a week and have everything
working except the DVD issue. It took a while to figure out the use of the
terminal command prompts, but it is worth the effort.

You mean the codecs and dvd matter?
I solved the dvd in one or two hours, since I came up to the source code of libdvdccs2 and recompiled it... Late after I was told that there was a precompiled version on a repository ^^
About the Totem matter... Well, I use to install a lot of software, try it and then remove most of it... So i found almost immediately ogle :)

Command line could be hostic... I come from a DOS world, so I feel at home in it :P

I happy to hear that you solved your problem anyway!

Greetings,
Alessandro

I installed the gxine from the add/remove section of applications Everything
went fine until I played back a dvd and all my sound was gone. The dvd
played back well but no sound. Also the dvd played back with the Totem
player but no sound. I have the same results with the ogle. Thank you for
your help. Gerry
