Windows Applications Compatibility

Asked by revdave

I am thoroughly embedded in Windows XP/Pro on a Dell Inspiron 600m, 2 GB memory, 60 GB HD with external USB drives.

Have been looking for a Linux based OS to transition to. Would like to consider Ubuntu, but have some applications that are Windows based with no Linux porting available. What are my options?

One application requires the presence of Internet Explorer (though I don't use it for browsing), have been using Safari but lately it crashes regularly. Have also used Firefox.

I've been using Thunderbird for email. Is there a Thunderbird port to Linux?

I use Palm Desktop for calendaring and syncing with my Treo 650. Is there a port for Desktop to Linux?

Other apps simply do not allow for non-Windows installations. Can anyone help?

Internet Explorer is not part of Ubuntu and yes Thunderbird is available on Ubuntu, but Evolution is the standard PIM-application. There are also applications to sync you Palm with Evolution, but you may want to check if your phone is supported.

1. for firefox to look like IE use the user agent switcher

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59

click on add to firefox and then install

2. Thunderbird is available for ubuntu

try the following procedure

You need to make sure you have enabled repositories once you did this is you need to update the source list using the following command

sudo apt-get update

Install thunderbird Using the following command

sudo aptitude install mozilla-thunderbird

If you want to open the application go to Applications -> Internet -> Thunderbird Mail Client

Now you need to configure your mail client with your server settings and email

3. refer these links

Thanks to Hans and Bhavani, I really appreciate the assistance.

I'm currently running Norton Ghost 12.0. Does anyone know whether it will continue to work under Wine?

Also, I'm Hotsync-ing my Treo 650 using a Bluetooth adapter. Any known issues there?
