Add-ons and starting up

Ive recently install Ubuntu 8.04.1 and i have a few issues which are:

1. Add ons like Java and adobe flashplayer install onto the files but i can't seem to find in thier files where to install actual thing itselfs

2. Ive tried install secondlife but cant with in its file find the set-up program

3. Does anyone suggest i have basic unbuntu so far what add-ons to make more visual and gain access to hardrivers

i am not sure what you mean by the third question. you can enable visual desktop effects by going to system -> preferences -> appearance and enabling it there
