Installation of Linux in external hard drive.

Can anyone tell me, step by step, how do I install Ubuntu Linux in my external hard drive. What are the keys I need to press and what should I see on the screen.

I know next to nothing about Linux installation, let alone installing onto the external hard drive. Thanks.

It doesn't seem to work with Ubuntu 8.10 ...
I only managed to UPGRADE my 8.04 on the external USB drive, but I could not to a fresh install ...
