Is the printer powered on when you do this ?

Both yes and no. Yes the first few times. Then I powered the printer off. After a few more attempts I removed the USB cable at the printer end.  Same result in all cases.

Maybe even more perplexing, I do not know how the printers got there. The computer had crashed. I installed Ubuntu 14.04 from a DVD. I used the option to wipe the drive and repartition the disk.  I did the updates, then upgraded to 16.04.  I went in to add the printer and it was already there, as was a printer that is directly connected to another PC on the same subnet.  Both printers were shown as off line. I recycled the one attached to the PC I had just rebuilt. No difference. I then tried to delete them. That is when I noticed that they disappeared from the dialog box and came right back.
