wiless not working but iwlist ath0 scan does

I just installed Ubuntu on my Toshiba Satellite A60 with a built in Atheros super G card.

Under System>Administration>Networking>Wireless Connection, it does not seem to find the ath0 and i can not connect to the internet.

if i type: "iwlist ath0 scan" it brings up a list of wireless networks as well as the one i am trying to connect to.

i am trying to connect to a router with WPA algorithm AES.

i have gone through the help pages many times and tried every variant of iwconfg (with sudo) i could come up with.
